Great final 2 hours on the river for the first time this season. 5.6 Combat was just perfect rigged on the 430 Powerex Wave 60. No real swell until about 3 when the due south winds kicked 20++. Perfect sun and 60 degrees with a good group out enjoying the last days of fall. Total enjoyment sailing day. Well worth the drive and the first few hours on the bigger gear.

Alright now! 3 out of 4 days on the new 4.7 Altas. Metro solid for 20-30++ SW all afternoon with sun and 60 degrees. The last 2 hours we could have been on the 4.2 if I had the time to change it. Great fun throwing down multiple carving 360's and near planing quick tacks. Also nice wave action off the Metro shoal too. Fun day of fall sailing.

Well.... worth the drive! watched for nearly 2 hours in the morning at both Metro and BL with literally nothing all. While a gusty due West that was reading 40 at 9 am at the Bouy it was time to try Harsens Island. Great decision as the winds were straight into the waist deep launch to 45k in the gusts. 3.7 overpowered the whole time with ramps galore for riding the jumping and even some solid sun through it all. JB, Fox and I representing the windsurfers while the rest were the small 6-9m kites. A standout day for the records - windiest day I have had on LSC and I thought for a moment there we were in Haterass.

Nice timing for the new 5.6 Combat and the 107, except it started to nuke as soon as I hit the water. Oh well back to rig the new 4.7 Atlas (on a 370) and 85 ProEd. 15-30 all day due west with 2-3 ft. swell. Super happy with the sails and the conditions although it got gusty and up and down at the end. 4+ hours of solid sailing. More on tap for tomorrow with gales on the way.

Exact repeat of same day last day and Craig and John had better kiting than i did a windsurf day. Good swell 5-6' and waves but winds never solid beyond 15-20 for 5.7. Then picked up 20-25 with rainstorms with a short time of shorebreak wave ripping. Needed about 2 more hours of this, it was just getting good. Mostly a classic west sunny day. Here's Craig ripping shoreline. Oh yeah new 5.4 Atlas on order as I blew out the 5.7 somehow...

Lex all day 25-35 NNE - one of the best Lex days I can think of - a ton of people out - even surfing... pure sun no clouds, 75 degrees, 3-6 inside waves 5-9ft. outside... Fully powered 4.5 from 11am until 3pm when I quit - arms were fully fried. I was first one there and on water with Larry (kiting-he slept in parking lot overnite!) at 8am - 11 on 5M when it was surprisingly flat with very little wave or swell. Lex classic summer cranker for August and it wasn't windy anywhere in the state but Huron coast due to Irene back end...

Two days later and I'm still beat - most exhausted sailing sesh I can ever remember - popping Alleve's like Pez...

Good day after 3 weeks of hot humid nothing. Lots of people out enjoying sun, 80 degrees and 20mph WNW breezes. 5m and 85 FSW working great to start but later 5.7m and the 107. Almost 5 full hours on water for me - even the second shifters got some late blasts. Let's hope for some more north days!!

Did Highland in rain today. Slipped (clipped out)a pedal on small drop out and didn't fall but smashed my shin pretty bad 5 minutes in. Went back to my car as a golf ball appeared there almost instantly and it started to rain. Thankfully it was cut too and started to bleed out so the golf ball didn't turn into a baseball. I said @uck-it and rode back into a rain storm for almost 2 hours of real slick rock. Bike coated in sand and mud. 90 degrees and 90% humidity and rain.

Lots of fun when you're wanting to get a good ride in. 14.45 miles in 1:45.

Last chance day and it appears as though sailing was good here yesterday (4.7's) as we waited at Roosevelt. Never great here but an hour or two of rides on the 85 JP FSW and 5.3 Forces. Lots of people here hoping it would go but it never really happened like day before.

Best was dinner at Everybody's Brewing in White Salmon - great view of Mt Hood. New hot spot for après.

Cloudy overcast and 4.5 to 3.7 winds make for a solid and tiring day! Pretty steady WSW 25-35 all afternoon with a great tall breaking swell - ramps galore for Metro. Millard and I had the place to ourselves and I got some good POV for the archives. Fun and exhausting - need more of these days for getting in mid season shape.

Sat. April 23rd Metro Worth the Wait

Looked light 15+ SW when I rigged the 6.9 Xspresh and the 107 FSW and went out.... But once out on the outer blue highway it quickly in 5.5 and I was way overpowered. Great time to choose the 5.7 and the 85 ProEd for a 2 hour sesh prior to the dinner hour. Nice late afternoon session - we'll take it at this point. Millard and Jeff there to enjoy and partake.

Day 2 Metro Goes Frigid Nuclear

Wow Day 2 of the 2011 sailing season and we're greeted with Sunday morning gales and temperatures in the 40° range. It was a good day overall, but the 4.5 Search was wrong initial call as I was getting blown off the water. Next, I quickly rigged down to the 3.7 Jet and had a great time when the sun would peek out. Although was still very cold waves and winds were constant and for the most part it was an excellent day to try out some heavy wind survival sailing. I was only one out until noon when Jeff arrived and I had another person to watch get worked in the nuclear gusts. I could have easily used a 3.2m after about 2pm as it was solid 30-40+ West with the entire beach area being blown into the air. Ramps galore and some nice swell to ride in but the ProEd FSW might just be too big and too light for a day like this. Maybe a weight jacket would work... Today the wind won - I hope to get in better shape for warmer temps. Nice chart on LSCM4 eh?

2011 Blue Lagoon Beginnings

Mark your calendars that Friday, April 15, was the first day of the 2011 sailing season. We had a good crew out of the Blue Lagoon for afternoon with winds 15 to 25 east to northeast (worked well almost onshore). I sailed powered on the 5.7 Expression and my 85 FSW ProEd. John, Millard, Craig, Jeff and the rest of the crew were all out in good preseason form. Temps not bad 50's for most parts but mittens worked well for me. Gales coming on Sunday so hoping that the rest of the weekend kicks like today. Also got to try out the new Drift 170HD camera on a few runs: check out the test video link below. Potential is great for some POV waves and jumps once we get some conditions firing. Good startup sesh.

Rare east metro day. 6.9 Xpresh and 107 FSW worked well enough for an hour and a half and a 'hot' freestyle sesh. Sun tried to break out and you could see the swell potential but the dense cold air never licked like Friday. 49 degrees still made it another true fall sailing day. Taking whatever we can get at this point.

Sun. Nov. 14, Solid Metro Dense Winds

Looked like 10-15 SW on the water but it sailed like 5M 15-25. So happy I rigged and got into the chilly LSC waters. Good enough for a nice 3+ hours on the 43 degree wind/water session. Sailed 5.7 Xspresh overpowered on the ProEd and loved it. Some nice 2-3' waves to ride and carve upon the outside and loads on carving 360's on the inside. Very happy ending if this is the last sesh of the 2010 season. An ugly day that was actually really pretty good. Oh it was cold out there too!

Ok day, overpowered on the 6.2 Alpha but blazing speed out to the Shoal to rip some small but long curling glassy waves. Got to run the 5m and the ProEd for about an hour too before it lightened up. Good mild day that saw 15-25++ SSW and temps hitting the 60's. Not bad for a Saturday that started with little potential. Everyone was happy until the MSU came on.

4.5m solid from 11am to 2pm 25-30mph SSW with 3-5ft. curling wave off the point. Sun and 60 degrees. Ramps to jump and ride everywhere. One of the best metro days in recent memory. Even an accidental port tack back loop attempt that was crazy close. Everyone was happy and the wind charts say why. Love it.

Very little leaf cover on trail makes IL a great fall ride. 14.2 miles in 1:14 - very fast and cool 65 degrees and still about 30% leaf tree coverage. Have to come back to wrap the season here.

Wed. Oct. 20 Ok day at Metro

Got alot of promise in this day with SW 20-30 forecast and SC warnings. However, weak wind 15-20 (but great sunny clear skies) persisted from 11am until 1pm when I rigged up a 5.7 xPersh and the 107FSW. Things started to really get good by 2pm with winds now 15-25 and waves off the point getting really nice 3-5' curling. By 3pm, I was on the 84 FSW ProEd and the same overpowered 5.7. Just had to add the outhaul and downhaul to maxout the range. The sail and board combo was awesome for full on power and control with wind gusting to 30+. Good fall day with reasonable mid 50 temps and mostly sunny. Lots of fun being full powered and little of no weeds. We need a couple more of these before DST kicks in.

Sunday Oct. 3 Classic Day at Lex

Classic day! Started nice and sunny with a 20-30 ENE swell and winds. Rigged the 4.5 and the 84 ProEd which worked great for the first few hours. Nice clean 4-6' waves all setting up for riding and jumping coming into the shorebreak. That east component to the wind had us all adjusting our sailing lines but everyone had smiles on there faces.

As the day wore on the 5 and then later the 5.7 made an appearance but the power and swell stayed there for the most part. A great lex day all in all and on a weekend no less. Hoping for a couple more of these. Soon.

Barely can say this day was a session at BL. NE winds 12-18 with some nasty rain and temps in the low 50's. Got the 107 FSW and the 6.2 Alpha out for and hour or two. Very disappointing with all the north forecasted. Should have followed the boys up to Lex where it kicked in late.

Sun and breezy 15-20+ on a clear weed free side of LSC - Anchor Bay. Powered up ripping all the way to the other side and getting in 2.5 hours before it dropped off. Well worth the drive and not going to Metro. Suns going down much earlier it seems these days...

A great 4.5-5M NW 20-30++ day on LT Bay. John and Craig learn how good it can be when the directions right and the pre-fall winds kick in. Classic sunny sky, puffy clouds and 70's temps makes for perfect formula for strong NW blow. Lots of ramps and long swell in the 4-8' range made it a super sesh and then you got all the shorebreak on the inside play on. Loved it on the 5M Search all day overpowered with the 85 liter FSW. Great bookend to a windy Northern MI weekend. Thanks to Brent - the winds return!

Saturday Sept. 4 Breakwall Breakdown

Great day that didn't work at the Petoskey Breakwall. NNW winds 25-30 with the repair barges blocking the way out of the marina. Damn shame too. It was a classic day forcing us to down to the Petoskey State Park where the shorebreak was heavy and the winds weak. Probably the worst resulting sailing I've had with so much wind potential. A day to forget as there was nothing to take away from it that was really good.

Locals said it was windiest day of the season and for those of us with very little summer sailing, it really was. Winds were SW to WSW all day at Sturgeon Bay Bliss Beach 25-35 with Gale gusts to 45. Gales sailing and great timing for Labor Day!

Brent and I started out on 5M in the AM and then quickly moved to the 4.5's and then I spent the afternoon overpowered on my 3.7. Brent found the courage to fight on with the 4.5 in nuclear afternoon winds. We had about a dozen sailors out with us all on 70-85 liter hulls and their smallest sails. Waves well upwind in the Sturgeon Bag Estates zone were 6-10 feet range and barreling often on the pointe reef (which is where I fell and got worked over the rocks). Each sesh out got shorter and shorter as the day wore on and the winds never let up. Loads of airtime were loaded as well as the down the waveface jibes. No room for error or slowing down. Schloggers were no where to be found on this day. Thank you Northern MI! Well worth the drive this time. More to come yet tomorrow.

Sunday Aug. 22 Lex Looks Good...but disappoints

Too bad the chart always looks good when it really isn't. Here it was North 20+ from 6AM on - signaling to me to the 1.5 hour drive up to Lexington but in getting there we find there's too much offshore NNW winds to deal with. With just JAB and I to rig we went WAY out and got about 1.5 hours in of 7M cruising. Something but not enough and it definitely doesn't cover the 3 hours of driving...

Monday Aug. 16, Finally a Metro Session

4 reasonably good hours on the 107 FSW and the very powerful 6.9 Expression. WSW-W-WNW mostly puffy in the 12-20 range gave a couple of good rise and kept me out for almost 4 hours in sun and 80 degrees. As for the water quality at Metro - it's horrible - almost criminal based on whoever is dumping overflows into LSC. Blue Lagoon is atleast clean - just wish it worked better on a west wind. Come on back winds, we need more of this stuff.

Sat. July 31, Highlands downhill day

Good ride in cloudy 75 degrees and had the place to myself mostly. 3.5 hour ride over 3600' vertical up (chairlift) and down for 15.8 miles. Ran almost all the expert terrain at Highlands but a couple extreme ones (AfterShock), had one minor sand pit fall. 22.5 Max speed and 5 mph average. The speedy part of the day.... that damn Mac Gully chairlift. Loved the Gororoth and Rob's Fun Run. Super fast with the seat down low. This freeride trail stuff is good times.

Sunday July 25, Is. Lake Mud Run

Good ride on a mostly dry but mud puddled singletrack. Island Lake in late afternoon for 12.9 miles in 1:18. Other stats 543 ascent and 510 decent, 9.8 mph average and 20.3 top speed. Sun and 85 lovely degree. Still I'd rather be sailing at Lex today.

1:34 of half of Grubers Grinder = 7.6 miles of hell riding tree damage trail. Never got going and a couple of times I completely lost the trail. Not fun even for a minute. I got out as soon as I hit the escape trail and that had trees down all over it! Worst. Ride. Ever.

Had a great ride doing 2 loops at Maybury SP. I can't believe how nice this place is for a 70% downhill and very fast singletrack. Did 14 miles in exactly 1:30. Very nice. I will be back here soon.

6.5 miles in 51 minutes. Gotta ride the Murray Lake next time and get

Great 5M solid caribe like day - felt like we were in Cabarete. Huge W 20-30 winds today - sun and 80's with nothing in the forecast!!! NOAA asleep at the wheel - easily small cap advisory day and it didn't let up as you can see from the charts above... That 11am spike got me out of work and happily so. 5M overpowered Search and the 85 FSW were perfect right up until 5pm when I was completely done (but the wind wasn't!). Good morning atleast of 20-30 North winds if you got to Lex by 8 am.
Craig, Millard and Jab all joined in on the fun but it didn't last
past noon as the sun came out and the winds dropped out. 60 degrees
and a very nice swell much better in fact for the winds with clean
steep curling faces many times. Beautiful morning after nothing as far
as wind goes in the past 3 weeks. Let's go again next weekend - please!

Highland got the best of me today for sure. 12 miles in 1:55 and I
didn't / couldn't do the D loop. Rocks, water, mud, hills - repeat
repeat repeat. Tough place to make it all the way. I will be back
though - when it's a little drier.

Pontiac ride was mostly dry after 4 days of rain and wet weather. Nice
fast ride in 1:12 for 10.5 miles. Good time at 9am to be on trail -
sun and 58 degrees, of course getting passed by single speeders still
sucks.

Sat. May 8, 3.7M - the chart says it all

Wow. Nice day to sail. At Metro with gusts to 60 between 11-12pm, it
was a great day to have the small gear. 3.3-4M worked well handling
the nuclear gusts early on at Metro when the wind was SW to W. But by
noon it was time to move to Blue Lagoon where it was starting to clock
more WNW but it still was solid 30-35mph with gusts 45++.

Craig, Jeff and I made a day of it and it paid off with almost full
sun by 2pm with static nuclear winds. Lots of ramps and spray coming
off the the water. I was perfect for most of the afternoon sesh on the
3.7 Jet and the 84 JP FSW. I easily could have used a 75 hull with a
little bigger sail but it was still nice comfortable set up when
things got crazy. I like to sail overpowered but I can say the lake
won this one today.

Tues. April 27 Lex Rocks Solid

Truly awesome day of 20-30K North winds at Lexington. Could not have
been more perfect wave setup - long and curling, spaced out and mostly
clean. A cool 55 degrees and blinding sun kept everything warm while
getting in almost 5 hours of sailing. Love this place when it's solid
north.

Baby -we hit it big today! Didn't get to Blue Lagoon until 4:35pm but between 5-8PM it rocked 4.5M Solid 20-35+++ WNW like never before. You literally could not go slow or come off a hyperplane . Conditions were the best I can remember here at BL in the 3++ years of sailing here. A great evening session that usually never happens after 5pm when the wind usually dies off. Wow everyine was happy. Thanks for Hieniken Light Craig!

2010 Sat. April 3rd Starts Solid at Marysville

Marysville was the place to be for the 2010 kickoff sail. I got there at 1 and it was 10-15 and flat for 45 minutes and I decided to rig my 4.5 with my new RDM gear see what it looked like and in 15 minutes it was 20-30 perfect ssw. Brent and I sailed 4.5 with Keith 5.2 from 2 to 5 pm, it was 20k++ solid with 3-5' classic wave swell that built quickly. At 4pm we had 3.5M nuking conditions but we all stayed and it very was holey just rock solid stuff...awesome kickoff for 2010.

Saturday Nov. 7 Marysville Sun and Fun

A great sunny 70 degree day at Metro in the early morning for a 6.2 Alpha session where it was 15-18K past the pointe with a smooth 2-3 foot lapping swell. Lots of fun but we need more wind and its south so off to Marysville we go. Glad we made the trip because its was 5M-6M mostly throughout the day with a nice swell and glorious sun. Winds 190-210 degrees in the 15-30+ range go the small boards out and the waves slashed up. The 5M and the 85ltr. worked most of the time today although the 6.2 and the 107 were overpowered fun.

All who made the trip were happy - hoping this season got 1 or 2 more sessions left on the weekend - this was a nice one.

Thursday, Nov. 5 Blue Lagoon in 2 hours

A quick run out to Blue Lagoon today at noon for some 5.7 overpowered
fun on a very cold but sunny day. Started on the big 107 but quickly
moved to the 85 as the wind gusted into 30's for a short time at 2pm.
By 3:30 it was over... Gotta blame this one on Millard for rigging a
4.2m. Saturday looks good for more from the south.

Great Saturday of sailing at Metro Beach with solid 4M winds 20-40 SSW / WSW all day starting at 8am for dawn patrol with Jeff B. Everyone had fun and I got to break another boom-damn! Probably shouldn't have rigged a 5M sail - it was too much when it kicked in at 1pm - it was blowing 40 at times (MB sailed a 3.2M). Check out the highlights below...

I had a great time making a 6.2 Alpha and the 107 FSW work in SSW winds going from 10 to 25 all day. The water looked flat but the winds were solid even though not consistently blowing. Had a great time throwing everything (even a couple of Duck Monkey Jibes) I could in case the 2009 season ends tomorrow. The final session on the water was about 2.5 hours and I'm paying for it now in regular Alleve dosing. I hope we get in 2-3 more fall days here as DST is next weekend-boo!

Friday Aug. 23, a Quick Sesh from the East

Well I got a little bit of the tail end of these strong east winds that really blew through earlier in the day 30-40++. Got in about 1.5 hours in on the 5M search in pretty solid and steady 20-25 winds. Oh yeah, it was raining about 90% of the time on the water and it was about 50 degrees - great sport! A quick one hour ride at Lakeshore Park for 12 miles on a dry, hard,
fun trail. Loads of other riders out enjoying the sun and crisp 50
degree temps. Great fall ride while the leaves are still mostly on the
trees.

Wednesday, Oct. 7, off to Blue Lagoon

Storm winds brought a due west gusty day to the Blue Lagoon - winds starting at 8am winds 25-40 solid 4.5 conditions where Jeff B and I had a great start to an alright day. Unfortunately the day was predicted to slip in wind speeds and shift more to the NW. Well the winds shifted lower after noon but they maintained the west direction - very tough direction. Well the day was worth it - got a couple of duck monkey jibes wired.

Tuesday, Sept. 29 Belle River not the place to be

Belle River CAN, This place has had its chances but yesterday with near gales it was still too lite for me, even at 20WNW gusts to 30 all wavy and mostly onshore. Its a place you have to hike out to get going and make it past the breakwall - I had a 5.7 rigged with the JP 85FSW and it worked for awhile and had lots of potential but then it dropped off after an hour or two. When its not cranking your left with is mushy loud conditions where the wind has no guts... The chart says it all - pretty good up until 2pm. Should have been at KP.

Great 40+ day at Metro - lots of guys out and lots of big SW winds. Many sailing 4M-4.5M sails all day - cold and rainy but hanging on and having a great sesh. Thanks to Bob for the great video summary of the day with the Canon D90. More on tap today!
